GREYMOUTH SUNDAY CONCERTS. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
GREYMOUTH, September 10. Sunday concerts bulk largely in local municipal politics. Recently a move was made in the direction of suppressing picture shows on the Sabbath, numerous petitions being presented to the Borough Council in favour of this course being adopted. The reply to this was a monster petition 30ft long, urging that the council continue to let the Town Hall for picture entertainments on Sunday. This petition included such names as " J. G. Ward," "J. A. Millar," " Dick Arnct," etc. Following this, the local clergymen notified the council that they had a counter petition in circulation, and hoped to obtain several hundred signatures to it. The council has therefore deferred coming to a decision on the matter, which is causing a great deal of local interest. The protestant churches are strenuously opposing concerts on Sandays, whilst the Labour party gives its suppoit in the opposite direction.
