TARANAKI OIL WELLS.

EXTENT OF DAMAGE. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 7. The dire-dors of the Taranaki Petroleum Co. met this morning and decided to remove- the derrick now idle on the Whiteley Truet property to No. 3 bore. The engine is apparently not seriously damaged, and it is confidently hoped to have everything in working order again within three weeks. Until then it is impossible to say definitely -whether the bore has suffered in any way. Providentially a heavy beam fell on the top of the bore and "effectually cut off the gas and oil while the fire was in progress. The total damage is estimated at about £400.
