Down the twilight softly gliding, j Crusting o'«r my jshelt'ring tree, Like a mantle white dividing ' Earth and dry's opacity, • Snowflakes soft are g«ntly falling— Ttar-drops from the eyes of storm; 'long "the wind his voice is calling: "Mortals, seek your firesides warm! 1 * Swifter, swifter whirl around me, Thick and white, the snowflakes chill; But my muse's spell has bound me, She must jingle while she will. Hist ! my wife's sweet voice does chide me : "John, come in! .You fool, come in!" But my muse still pants beside me, "Snowflaies' " melody to spin. Frcm the h«dge "behind the glarden '• Boyish laughter floats to me; — ' Ah, I crave i;he muse's pardon, j And I listen 4o tkei- glee. j On my own sweet youth I'm. irmsin', j Of that happy life I dream — , Stop, I'm inspiration locsin,' — Baok I'li turn me to my theme. "Snowflaies, snowflakes downward winging," Sings my muse in rhythm clear — Zounds! ... A mass, chill, hard, and clinging, Strikes me on the windward ear.
