GOLF WEEK IN AUCKLAND.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING
AUCKLAND, September 11. The golf meeting promises to prove highly successful. The fine weather of the past week has improved the links, which are now in excellent condition. Almost 600 entriee have been received from considerably over 100 competitors. The ©retries for the principal events are : Amateur Championship, 80; Open Championship, 66; Foursome Boj?ey, 100; Bogey Handicap, 92; Medal Handicap, 86; Driving Competition. 72: Approaching and Putting Competition, 72. The Professional Match ha 3 attracted six entries, which include the leading players of th« Dominion, Clements, of Wanganui, the present open champion of New Zealand, being one of the number. The competitors for the Amateur and Open Championships include H. C Smith, of Dunedin, present amateur champion of New Zealand, and A. C. Duncan, of Wellington, ex-champion. The tournament will be memorable in these parts, as it will be the- last of the s rt held on the present, course. The club intends vacating it at the end of the present month, and making a start on the now link* a1"a 1 " Otahuhu almost immediately. This meeting will be a meeting of giants. All the leading golt players, with, perhaps, the exception of Kmepo 'i'awlia, "ho has just won the Manawatu Championship, and ia playing at the top o r his form, ato en hand, including H. C. Smith (present champion), A. Duncan. K. Duncan, W. Reid, A. Abbott, B. B ".Vo-ul, J. Forbes (St. Clair), Burns (Auckland champion), and J Harold. September 13. The New Zealand golf championship meeting opened at Cornwall Park Links today in perfect weather. The links were in splendid order, the fine weather of the past week having improved the greens. The play to-day was confined to the first two rounds of the Open Championship, and some good golf was shown. Clements, the Wanganui professional, led in the first round with a score of 80, this being 5 better than Bogey. His nearest attendants were A. S. Duncan (Wellington) 82, F. S. Hood (Auckland professional) 82. J. C. Bidwell (Wairarapa) 82, A. J. Abbott (Wellington) 83, J. Forbes (St. Clair) 83, J. C. Burns (Auckland) 84. 11. B. Lu?k (Christchurch) 85. G. M. Martin (Wellington professional) 85. F. G. Hood, J. Hood, and G. R. Crowley made the good scores of 39 each on the home journey in the first round. In thp second round W. B. Colbeck led the fine score of 79, and H. C. Smith IDunedvn) 82 and J. A. Clements
82 were nearest Colbeck's score. A. S. Duncan, F. G. Hood, J. C. Bidwell, and J. Watt (Dunedin professional) each made 84, while D. Hood (Christchurcb professional) and B. B. Wood each equalled Bogey. Clements, the present open champion, was leading at the end of the day's play by 4 strokes. The Open Championship will be concluded to-morrow, and the Amateur Championship will be commenced. The day's totals are as follow: —

Morpeth (104), and R. B. Willock (105) returned cards, but they did not do so in the second round. H. R. Cooper, A. W. Murray, C. E. Kusabs, and H. B. Watson did not return cards in either round.
