AUSTRALIAN RULES.
AUCKLAND v. CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, September 11. The first representative match between Auckland and Canterbury under Australian rules was played at St. Albans Park this afternoon. The weather was fine, but a fairly strong wind was blowing, and the ground was very heavy in places. The Aucklanders, who showed better combination, had the best of the play in the first spell, having the wind behind them, and at call of time had scored 29 points to 8, and at the end of the second quarter they had 37 points to 11 in their favour. The home team subsequently had the better of the play, but they could not quite make up their arrears, and were eventually beaten by 7 goals and 8 behinds (50 points) to 5 goals and 17 behinds (47 points). The visitors were slightly better than the local team in the fine points of the game, especially in their accuracy in centring the ball, but on the whole both sides performed creditably.
