CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR.
CONVENTION AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, September 7. ' The New Zealand Christian Endeavour Convention commenced in Wellington to- ' day, the Rev. J. T. Pinfold, M.A., presiding. The report referred to the organisation -work recently carried out. It was to be regretted that nothing definite had been done in connection with the formation of the Otago Provincial Union. Matters concerning the formation of a correspondence school were not ready for seiious consideration by the council. The Wellington Union had now 1962 members ; Dunedin 1577, Canterbury 1341, Auckland , 1284, Manawatu 608, Otago 382, Gore I 295, West Coaat 164, Southland 154,. I Clutha. 105 ;— total, 7672, as compared • with 7864 in 1907. The financial contrii bution had averaged 10s 7d per capita. ! The report will be considered to-morrow. I A citizens' meeting was held to-night, i addresses being delivered by Rev. J. T. . Pinfold, Dr Newman (Mayor of Welling1 ton), Rev. E. Bandy (Dunedin), the Chinese Consul, and Rev. E. A. Kirk- , wood (Auckland). It was 42 ve&rs ago that Alceka was ' purchased for £1,440,000. The price ' feemed large at the time, because very few persons in the United States | supposed that that province' would ever s , pay for ifcself. The amount o£ gold which ■ Alaska now furnishes every yea*- would pay that sum three times over. And its fish, > furs, lumber, and other products atM s largely to its revenue which the country is l getting from its big northern colony, 6ays i Leslie's Weekly. Moreover, a beginning 1 i has not yet been made in developing its • . capabilities.
