OBITUARY.
MS E. H. HARRIMAN. NEW YORK,. September 10. Mr E. H. Harriman, the railway magnate, is dead. He died after a relapse which was due to acute indigestion. There ■was heavy selling on the New York Stock • Exchange in anticipation, of his death, but the actual news was received too late to further affect tha stocks. j September 11. Big money interests in New York, including Rockefeller, Morgan, the First National Bank, Kuhn, Loeb, Speyer, James Stillman, and Flick, have combined to prevent " bear " raids. The combination continues until it is certain that Mr Harriman's interests are in safe and capable hands. It is reported that the combination has guaranteed £5,000,000 for the purpose of supporting the market. The chief Harriman stocks rose 6 to 12 points. ■During Mr Harriman's illness crowds of reporters watched his house night and day. Throughojit the whole time railway stocks fluctuated violently. Mr Harriman virtually controlled 85,000 miles of rail■way, representing £600,000,000 capital, besides having a vedee in the management of an additional 40,000 miles. Mr Harriman was one of the "self-made linen" of New York. He was born in 1848, and, after receiving a common-school education, started life as a broker's clerk. He bad interests in nearly 50 corporations of various kinds, principally railways. The systems which he controlled have a total mileage of 27,500, and the 6tocl» and bonds .jeld by his " group" represent 976 million dollars and 1,225,000,000 doLl&re respectively. Mr Harriman arrived in Europe in June, en route for Vienna, where he intended to consult a specialist, but he denied being any- worse in health than he was a year ago.
