Lieutenant Shackleton is giving the benefit of his recent, experience to the preparations for Captain Scott's expedition to the Antarctic. The cost is estimated at £40,000. Captain' Scott hopes to start in August, 1910. He intends, with a view of investigating virgin areas, to establish his base in King Edward Vll Land, with -a second <base 400 miles eastward of M'Murdo Sound. He will take Manchurian ponies to carry the food to the foot of the glaciers, and their place will then be taken by Eskimo dogs Captain Scott will utilise improved motor sledges, which have been satisfactorily tested in Norway.
