DRAUGHTS MATCHES.

WYNDHAM-TUTURAU t. MAT\URA ISLAND-SEAWARD DOWNS. 8C PLAYERS ENGAGED. The oombined match Wyndham and Tuturau against Seaward Downs and Mataura island took place in the Zealandi* Hall, Wyndtham, on Monday evening, August 30, when 80 players were engaged. It was a pleasant foregathering of th« devotee- of the beard, including, as it did, some of the veterans of contests in Wyndham of over a Bcore of years ago. And some of these havo-not lost their skill in the auld-f arrant game, which is peculiarly Scottish in its development. -Mr B. H Joyce (the. Wyndham secretary) was responsible for the arrangement*, and had everything m readiness, and Mr Nutsfcrd (the hall proprietor) did everything he could to meet requirements. Appended are the scores: — Wyndham-Tuturau. Seaward Downs-Ma-taura Island.

Rev. D. Rankin (captain of the Wyndham combination) at the close of the play announced the result, and said that he hoped that the effect of the match would be to add to the personnel of the various clubs, and that interest in th* scientific game of draughts would be stimulated generally. The spectators would see that it was a game that could be enjoyed without, as in some other contests, the risk of a black eye. At the subsequent social the Rev. D. Rankin (.who presided) suggested the possibility of a combined match of still larger scope for next year, in which the whole of Lower Mataura would meet the Gore and neighbouring club 3. Mr H. M'Call (who piloted the visiting team) acknowledged the hospitality of Tutu-rau-Wyndham a3 entertainers, and incidentally supported the Rev. Chairman's suggestion as one worthy of being given effect to. Mr D. Wards (for Mataura Island) thanked the entertaining clubs, and hoped to meet them again. Songs were sung by Messrs D. Wards. R. M'Kay, and W. Dickie, end Mr G. Folster gave anothei of his good recitations. A well-deserved vote of thanks, moved by Mr A. Dickie, was accorded to Mr R. H. Joyce the Wyndham secretary for the complete manner in which he carried out the arrangements for the match.
