WAIKOUAITI.

September 6. — The annual Oddfellows' ball, which was held on the 25th ult. in the Public Hall, attracted a very large attendance, and arrongst those present were a number of visitors from Palmerston and elsewhere. The music was supplied by Messrs Yates and BeathT" of Dunedin, Mr James M'Gill acted as M.C., and the catering was satisfactorily attended to by Messrs Crocome and Jamieson. Before {he close Bro. E. H. Clark, M. P., on behalf of the visitors, thanked the local brethren for their hospitality. Anglers' Society. — A meeting of local anglers was held "on Tuesday last for the purpose of considering the advisability of forming an anglers' • society in Waikouatii. There was a good attendance, and it was unanimously decided that such a society be formed in order that the interests of anglers might be fully protected. Mr A. A S. Orbell was elected president, Mr R. Templeton secretary, and Messrs S. R. Smith, F. Ward, and Thomas M'Lay, together with the president and secretary, were appointed a General Committee. The subscription was fixed at Is, and some 20 members were enrolled. It is intended to arrange various competitions during the coming season The river is at present in good fishing condition, and local anglers are looking forward to good sport when the season commences. Borough Council. — The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti Borough Council was held on Monday evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr B. Irwin), Crs E. Davis, A. Heckler, James M'Gill, S. R. Smith, F Tourney, and S. Vanes. An apology was received for the absence of Cr Thomas Smith. Mr W. G. Lawless wrote asking that the footpaths leading to his property be gravelled, and the application was left in the hands of the Works Committee to attend to. A letter was received from the Waikouaiti county clerk stating that in the event of any repairs to the borough pound being required the County Council was prepared to contribute towards the cost of same. The Registrargeneral, Wellington, wrote asking for information for insertion in the municipal handbook for 1909, and the clerk was authorised io forward the information. The Paymaster-general wrote notifying the council that the sum of £49 12s 6d, being Government subsidy on rates, had been remitted to the credit of the Waikouaiti district fund account. The clerk was instructed to write to the Valuer-general requesting the payment of subsidy on the total rates collected up to the 30th June, 1909. Various communications relating to borough affairs were received. In view of the expiration of the present lease of the lp^ervoir reserve on the 30th November next the Reserves Committee was asked to inspect the fences on the property and report regarding their condition at" next meeting. In accordance with the recommendation made at the last meeting of the council a general rate of %d in the pound was struck, «and Crs Davis and Heckler appointed to sign the rate book. The total rateable property in the borough i 3 valued this year at £76,355. and the exemptions amount to £6721. making a gross total of £83,076. Accounts amounting to £14 were passed for payment. Draughts Match — A combined team numbering 27 players, representing the Waikouairi and Dunback Draughts Clubs visited Palmerston on Friday evening last and played a very enjoyable match with the Palmerston Club. The local men proved to have a better knowledge of the game than the visitors, and the figures announced zf the close showed that Palmeraton had secured 43 wins, Waikouaiti and Dunbaek 23. while 22 game 3 were drawn. Messrs Thomas M'Lay (Dunback) and Geo. Gilmcre (Waikouaiti) thanked {he members of the Palmerston Club for tho very pleasant evening which had been spent. A match between the Dunback and Waikouaiti Clubs will take place at Palmerston next week. These clubs are at present about equal in strength, and a very interesting game is anticipated..
