THE PERILS OF THE SEA
*-r S.S. E~AKAIA DISABLED. LONDON, September 1. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Rakaia, which left London for ! New Zealand on August 7, was spoken on j August 26 in lat. 13.34 S., long. 0.12 E. I The master of the Rakaia signalled that the vessel was not under command. When the Rakaia was spoken she was in the vicinity of the island of St. Helena, of? j the west coast of Africa. She left London ! about August 7 for Dunedin, Bluff, and Lyttelton, and is due at this port on the 28th inst. As this vessel sailed a few days after th© Maori was wrecked it is probable that she has on board consignments to replace the -goods lost when the Shaw Savill, and Albion Company's liner went down. If this should prove to be the casi and the Rakaia should be delayed for any length of time, the loss tc local importers will be most unfortunate. I The Rakaia is a steel screw steamer of 5628 tons gross, and she was built in 1895 I by Messrs Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co., at , Newcastle.
