INVERCARGILL D.L F LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto '" Excelsior." The above club held the usual weekly meeting in the clubrooin, E.?k street, on "Wednesday evening. August 25. Shasta presided, and there was an excellent attendance of members, including S&dvis ar. d two Oih«r friends, visitors for the ever.i'.ng. and they w«re all made heartily welcome. Our club has been labouring u'vder difficulties of late. On Wedne:d»y our tab.'c had disappe^rsd, the next the key of the door as we!i s<= the table was missing, and things reached a climax l&3t evening, when, on trying to light up, it was d'»co\ ere-d that the gas had been cut. off. To get out of thisdifficulty occasioned a greal ds?l of hard thinking, nunjsrov.s suggestions, etc.. for the , mosi. part impisiible. In the ir.:dti cf i the confusion it was noticed that two of the members had vanished. However, they soon returned, bringing v/'Ah them the r.eces- j sary articles for temporary lighting pui-poses • which, when lighted, turned out to be six candle power. Aifter the novelty had worn ; off, the business for the evening was gone on with. The subjec- for discus-sion was , '"lhe Press as an Ir.fli;en<* on New Zealand . Life and Politics," and this was treated as ' a special subject. Shasta, Lavengro, and ! Gasino had papers. Mavis had also gone to the trouble of writing a paper, but, unfortunately, had left it securely locked away in her school desk. Shasta's and Lavengro's papers were real "top-notchers," and &oth I are being sen-t to the Witness for publica- | tion. The leading of these papers waa ! thoroughly enjoyed, though the readers were j rather at a disadvantage, having to hold the ■ paper in one hand and a candle in ihe otherA syllabus for next three months wa<j ' drawn up and agr«ed to, and this concluded 1 the business for the evening. j CASINO, Secretary.
