CHESS IN WELLINGTON.
WELLINGTON CLUB. i Good progress has been made (says the Evening Post of the 23rd ult.) in the annual handicap tourney of the Wellington Chess Club. The section-play is nearly completed, and the finals will probably be commenced early in September The bsst scores to date are as follow: — In section A: W. E. Mslsou, 9 wins, no losses, one game tc play ; P. Still. 6—3,6 — 3, with one game to play; E. Hicks, SJ— 3J. with one game to play ; Barnes, SJ— 4J (complete); and S. Mackay, 4—3, with three games to play. Ihe three highest scorers in each section >are to play off in a final full-round tourney of six to decide the various prizes, and also first possession of the Petherick Trophy No. 2. It will be seen that W E. Mason is sure of a place in the finals, and that there is every prospect of a close finish between Messrs Still, Barnes. Hicks and S Mackay for the other -wo places. Mackay's chance of securing \ place in the finals "is not to be despised, as he has coTSmenced two of his three outstanding games, and they no;h stand adjourned greatly in his fav.-.ur Messrs Fouhy and Gyles, sen., who fmiM.cd ' with a tally of 4J each, are just out of the running. Barnes in the later stage? m:a.■a great recovery Irom a bad start. Oao'un Mickle's retirement, after playing only two games, was greatly regretted, he having kept in form while pursuing his military siniies in England. 1 I» section B Mr W. Tonks, a new member, I has proved himself " a dark horse." ha.ving , mads the fine- score, of eight wins, ni losses, 1 and one game to play. He i? therefore sure of a place in the " final six." The next j best tallies in section B are: W S. Ander- j son, 5—4; W. J. Carman, 3—3 (three to play) ; H. A. Ward, 4—5 (complete) ; J. Morris. . 4—4 (one to play); S. Scott, 4—4 (one to play) : Douglas. 3—43 — 4 (two to play) ; and W. j R. Bock, 2—32 — 3 (four to play); and any two j of »hese seven playing may qualify for the finals.
