BRASS BAND CONTEST.
WANGANUI, August 30. At a meeting of the committee appointed to make arrangements for the North Island Brass Band Association's 1910 contest, a. sub-committee reported that £700 had been guaranteed by local tradesmen. The following prize list was adopted :—: — A Grade.— £loo, £50, and £25. B Grade.— £so. £25, £15 lfX and £5. Quickstep.— £4o. £20, and £10. Grand total, £350. The question of inviting an Australian band was discussed, but nothing definite was done. It was resolved that the association be approached with the view of having the disqualification of the Wellington Garrison Band removed. An interesting article showing how disease is spread by the house fly — and the remedy — appears in a late issue of the Lancet (London), which says: "In our own experience the best exterminating agent is a weak solution of formaldehyde in water — say, two teaspoonfuls to the pint, — and this experience has been confirmed by others."
