AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP.

ME J. A. BOREHAM WINNER,

The Brisbane tourney for the Australasian championship, which started on the 7th inst., was concluded on the 18th, Mt J A. Boreham proving the winner, with Passey, second. There were only 12 entries, bua these included the various State champions. The rules, as we predicted, were altered, and twoK 'sittings per day were played, and . the. " sealed move " , done away with. The openings were "restricted^ But -'in what w*y we •have' not yet learned. The ballet for the pairing in the first round resulted as fallows: — Mr Hugh Egan (Victorian champion) plays Mr J. Armstrong (Ballarai). Mr Gray "(Brisbane) v. Mr Bylands (Brisbane^ [ Mi Greville (Brisbane) v Mr Sluice (New South Wales). Mr Warnock (N.S.W., ex-champion of Australasia) v. Mr J. Lee (Sydney). ilessp Boreham (champion of N.Z.), Drury (champion of N.S.WJ, P. Passey (champioiu of Queensland), and Mr C. Watts (Brisbane) the byes. The amount of prize money 'must have been disappointing. Here in New Zealand we have to collect from £60 to JEBO, but Brisbane, according to private information, had only a total of £26. The first prize would! therefore be quite unworthy of the event, unless our information is wrong. On behalf of New Zealand players we extend hearty congratulations to Mr Boreham on his victory, which does not at a.ll come as a surprise. We withhold further comment on the tourney until fuller details arrive. The following additional particulars aie tp hand just before going to press: — — Firßt Bound. — Egan (2) beat Armstrong (0), 3 draw* Rylamd beat Grey. Lee (2) I>aat Warnock (1), 3 draws-. Sluice beat Greville — Second Round.— Boreham (2) be»t Egan (0), 3 draws, Paasey (2) beat WMt» (0), 3 dr*wst, Drury (4) beat Bylands (0). Sluie* beat Lee. — vThird Round.-»* Boreham beat Sluice. Passey^ beat' Drury/- '-- —Final.— Boreham beat Passey. The figures for some of the play are not given.
