PROSECUTION AT WELLINGTON". WELLINGTON, August &3. As the result of the seizure of certain uncustomed goods by the Customs officials on tlie Tongariro on . Saturday, Charles Maurer, barber on the vessel, appeared ia the Magistrate's Court this afternoon oefoTe ftlr W. G. Riddell, S.M., charged with harbouring uncustomed goods to the value of £71. The articles consisted of 11 overcoats, 65 ostrich feathers, and 10 dress pieces. The Tonga-riro had been previously searched by the Customs authorities, when, on the occasion of her arrival from London, some of the engineers were brought Defore the Magistrate and fined. Since then the liner Eae been loading along the coast, her last port being Waitara. Mr Fitzgibbon, for defendant, in applying for a remand, intimated that the defendant's vessel would sail for England on Thursday. Defendant had a good de« fence, and <lid not wish to lose Bte poei« tion on the ship. Mr C. S. Nixon, Collector of Customs', raised no objection to the request, and defendant was accordingly remanded to appear on Wednesday. He was admitted to bail in one surety of £50. It is understood that a ■warrant has been taken out for the arrest of William John Pine, storekeeper on the Tongariro, on a charge of having harboured uncustomed goods.
