NEW ZEALAND LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP.

PALMERSTON N., August 19 There was delightful weather for the starting of the N.Z. ladies' golf championship at Horowhitu. The sandy links had thrown off the water wonderfully, and beyond the fact that the ground was sott round about four greens, and that a small lake. made an additional hazard at one, the course was in really good order. The first round of the championship resulted in two ex-champione going out. Miss Rattray (Dunedin), thrice champion, went down to Mies Braithwaite, of Hastings, by 3 up ana 2 after playing much below form. Mrs Bidwell, Wairarapa, another ex-champion of New Zealand, went out to Miss B. Wood, of Christchurch, on the eighteenth hole. The present champion (Miss Christie, ot Oamaru) had a bye. The other leading players came through without trouble. The score for the course under the Ladks' Golf Union system was 82, and the nearest anyone got to it was a 93 by Mrs Bevan in the championship. This was closely followed by a 94- by Miss Snodgrass (of Westland) in the handicap, and a 95 by Miss Stephenson, the Taranaki crack and ex-champion. Tho winning team in the Teams' Match—Wairarapa*—actually had an average only a fraction under 106. Miss Stephenson's 95 for Ngamotu was 5 lees than any other score in the team. The Stroke Handicap saw Miss Humphries (Christohuroh) prodaice a good round of 100, and as she had a handicap of 21 it netted 79. To-morrow the second round in the championship will be played, as well as the Ladies' Foursomes. Following are the results: —

STOKE HANDICAP.

August 20. Th© weather was again delightful for the Ladies' Golf Championship, and the links were in admirable order, much so that Mrs Guy Williams, ex-champion, who is in excellent form, put up a li'.krecord (la/dies') of 89, the previous b'-t being 92. The Ladies' Golf Union pj • for the- links is 82, fo that Mrs Wil'ianVkansLicia^j of 7 in tlie union list could exactly

match the difference. The result of the play to-day was as follows: — Mrs Hannay beat Miss Gorrie. Misa Symes beat Miss Fulton. Miss Christie won by default from. Miss Mendielson. Miss Cowper beat Miss Martin. Miss Braithwaite beat Mrs Mellsop. Mlisa Brandon beat Miss Standisb. Miss Stephenson beat Miss Mill. Miss Beatson beat Miss Gorrie. Miss Wilson beat Mrs M'Roe. Miss Wood beat Miss Snodgrass. Mrs Bevan beat Mrs Freetih. Miss Hamlin beat Airs Acheson. Mrs Williams beet Miss Campbell. Miss Humphreys beat Mie-r Sharp. Mrs Turnbull beat Miss Tansley. Miss Gould beat Miss Gray.

The Handicap Fouirsomes drew a very large field, and the winners proved to b© a local pair with a 12 handicap, while two Napier eirls came second. A ball moved on the last putting -green, and counted a stroke against tihem. The first 20 scores were as follow: —

The ladies' golf championship meeting was continued to-day in fine weather. Two surprises were effected during the afternoon — Miss A. Humphries boating Mrs Guy Williams, and Miss Cowper beating Miss Christie, last year's champion. Playing in the Bogey Match in the afternoon, Mrs Williams repeated her feat of the previous day by doin«- th° round in 89.

The following are the results of the play in. the championship: — Miss Hannay beat Miss Symes, 1 up. • Miss Cowper beat Miss Christie, 4 up and 2 to play.

Miss Brandon beat Miss Braithwaite, 3 up and 2 to play.

Miss Stephenson beat Miss Beatson, 7 up and 6 to play. Miss B. Wood beat Miss Willson, 2 up. Mrs Bevan beat Miss Hamlin, 1 up. Miss A. Humphreys beat Mrs Williams, 3 up and 1 to play.

Miss Gould beat Mrs Turnbull, 4 up and 2 to play. The Bogey Match resulted as follows :— Hep. Score.

Miss Brewster (New Ply-

mouth) 18 ... 2up Miss S. Gorrie 10 ... All square Mrs Guy Williams ... 5 ... 2 down August 22. There have been only slight showers today, following showers last night, so that if the rain continues to hold off the links should be in good order for the semi-final. Miss A. Humphreys's brilliant play is the subject of general talk.

Miss Rattray, on behalf of the South Island, and Miss Duncan (captain of the Wellington Club), on behalf of the North Island, have selected two teams of eight to represent the respective islands in a teams' match, the scores to be gross. The scores in the Donnelly Cup, the Coronation Medal (to be played to-morrow), and the first six scores on each side are to be taken. The teams are as follow : —

North Island. — Misses Stephenson, Hannay, Brandon, Hamlin, Cowper, Mesdames G. Williams, Beehan, and Bidwell. South Island.— Misses Rattray, Gould, -Campbell, Wilson, Mill, Christie, Wood, and Snodgrass.

The draw for the play in the championship to-morrow is: Miss Hannay v. Miss Cowper, Misa Stephenson v. Miss Brandon, Miss Humphreys v. Mrs Bovan, Miss Wood v. Miss Goald. The chances of Miss Stephenson are most favoured.

August 23. The weather was again delightful for the Gold Championship to-day, and, as on preiious days, further surprises were effected in the championship. The fourth round, uhich is unfinished, has eliminated the last of those who have held the New Zealand championsiiip, and has left the semi-final to previously untried golfing talent. Mrs Birlwill, Miss Rattray, Mrs Williams, and Miss Stepheneon (ex-cham-pions), a«d Mies Christie (the present champion), are all now spectators. Perhaps the greatest surpjke of all was Miss Stephenson's defeat, because she had been playing such &ohd golf all the way through that her participation in the final was looked on as assured. The quality of the play may he judged from the fact that Miss Brandon, a young Wellington player, who defeated her, put in a very hot round, and then went out again and equalled the record for the links. At the outset of the tournament the ladies' links record was 92, but since then Mrs Williams ha 6 twice done 89, and Mrs Bovan and Miss Brandon did it to-day. Miss Stephei:«m on Saturday did 92, after !csin<j three strokes in a hollow lo£ Miss Humphrey's win was very remarkable, as Miss Asher, her opponent, was dormy four, and both were playing strongly. The Coronation Medal went to Miss Brewsber, of New Pl\ mouth. She would also have taken tho Donnelly Cup on the same score, but while others of the Taranaki contingent wore entered for it Mi-se Breweter was not. She was not thought to have a ebmee, so the cup wont to Miss N. Gorrie, v, ho was tho next be-t scoier.

Th--> dminsr competition was won by Miss Ilrmlin, of Napier, with three inches short of 156 yaixls. Mits B. Hindma-rsh (Napier)

was second with 151 yards, and Miss Campbell third, 149 yards. The semi-final and final of the championship will bo played to-morrow, when Mrs Bevan will meet Miss Humphreys, and Mies Brandon will meet Mies Cowper in the former. Several of the competitors will leave during the d»y, having had a very «njoydible time, but ethers -will remain for the Manaw^tu Club ct^mpionahip meeting.

Keen interest was taken to^«y in th» North v. South Island match, between teams selected by Miss Rattray, of Dunedin, ann Miss Duncan, of WeHington, respectively. The game resulted in a deoisive victory for the North, by 568 to 593, th« aoores being: — North Island. — Miss I#. 'Brandon 89, Miss Stephenson 92, Mrs J. Williams 94, Miss Bevan 96, Mrs Bidwill 97, Mi6s Hannay. 100;— total. 568. South Island.— Miss Battray 93, Miss Mill 98, Miss Christie 98, Miss Snodgrass 99, Miss Gould 100, Miss Ward 105;— total, 595. The scores -were those made in th* Coronation Medal round, and the best six out of the team of eight were taken. Appended are the scores in the Coronation Medal and Donnelly Cup matches: —
