UNLOCKING NATIVE LANDS.
AUCKLAND, August 20. A portion of the Te Akau Block, which was purchased from the Natives by the Government a year or two ago, will be open for selection urder the optional system at Auckland and iNgaruawahia on October ]1. This part ot the block, which has been loaded by the Lands Department, consists of some 14,000 acres of some of the best land in th-e block. There have already been a large number of inquiries in regard to it, and a record application list is expected. The Lands Department has lately entered into negotiations for the purchase of furlher portions of the 'ie Akau Block, situated to the north and south of the portion already purchased. that to the iK>rth being the property oi the Ngatitatinga tribe, whilst that to the Louth is owned by the Tainui tribe. Mr Patterson, chief accountant of the Lauds Department, is now in the district in connection with the purchase of this lan'l. which is not yet concluded. A fritting of the Native Land Couit will be h<>M at Ngaruawahia on September 2'd for the purpose of dealing with the Moetangi Block, consisting of soms 45.000 aues. About ha!f a doyen N.'thef- ot the Waikato and Xgatimaniapoto tribes are interested in the block. — Mount Etna is the highebt \olcano in Europe.
