KNAPDALE.

August 21. — Aftsr enjoying a period cf fine mild weatiier we awoke on the 17th inst., to find the ground covered with snow. Such a condition of affairs continued for several days, but at time of writing, however, the weather is considerably milder. Farm work is well advanced, a large area having been disced, while on a few farms sowing operations have commenced. The majority of farmers intend putting fn a few acres of wheat, in expectation of the high- price continuing for that cereal. A considerable growth is noticeable in the- more favourably situated grass paddocks, while in several instances young lambs have made their appea^ranee. Batchelor's Ball. — On Friday evening the Knapdale Hall was en fete, the occasion being the annual ball of the local batchelore. Judging by the attendance the invitations had been fully availed of.^as upwards of 80 couples were present. Messrs J. Cooper and A. Falconer acted in the capacity of M.C.'s in a very obliging and courteous manner. Songs were rendered by Miss Wayte and the Messrs M'Donald, Meeohang, and Beath, added greatly to" the enjoyment of the evening Dairy Factory.— Mr Dumfeleton^ proprie** tor of the local cheese factory »3^it present engaged in preparing for the coming season. In anticipation or a high price being offered^ for milk, dairy cows aie in great demand in this district at preseiit.^" The dairying industry is evidently increasing: in Southland, as several new factories will commence operations m the adjoining district^ this season. Roads. — At present the roacW in this locality are in a very good condition for this time of the year. Most of our roads being metalled, the residents in the distriot have little to complain )i in this respect, when compared with their less fortunate friends in the back blocks. j
