TAIERI MOUTH.

August 19. — At the beginning of the week" it was my intention to write and say thai spring had fairly set in, but a sudden change came. A cold, bitter wind began to blow, and tnen came heavy showers of hail. On Tuesday night about three inches of snow fell, and on Wednesday morning and all day there were heavy showers, first! hail and than rain. The snow disappeared 1 near the beach in a very short time, but it took some time to melt on the hills To-day (Thursday) it i 6 pretfcy well all away. This weather is unfortunate as there is a sprinkling "of lambs about and very little grass yet. The indications at present ar« favourable.

A Fatal Ending.— 3lr C. Fellowfield, whom I mentioned in ray last as having met with a serious accident through tha kick of a horse, passed away tn the Dunedin Hospital on ,the 12th inst. His remains ~w«re brought to the Taiori Beach and interred in the cemetery here, a largb number following the .remains to the grave.: Our Launches^— -Something has unfor-. tunately gone wrong with the engine of Mr Knarston's new oil launch, arul as ha is haviag his other boat put in thoroughrepair before"" the busy season sets in, if makes it rather awkward for him as h4 has to get his goods conveyed to his lowetf store at the beach from Titri in a rowing boat. Mr Knarston hopes to have tho launch going, in fact both of them, ia a very short time. A Railway Wanted. — The temporary breakdown of the oil launch has emphasised fche' disadvantages Taieri Mouth residents have to out up with as compared with, say, Warrington. We are six milea from the railway from Waihola and eight miles from Titri. What we want is a branch line from either of the places mentioned, and then we would have a market; for our produce, and icr. the splendid timber that is now allowed to rot when" cut down. What a boon such a line would 1 be to visitors dur ; ng the summer month*. I should think the money required to build a bridge at Taieri Mouth would go a long wa> towards constructing the short lino referred to. I hope the residents here wi«l wake ap ami realise the great future before the district if the means of communication are improved.
