August 16. — Scarlet fever of a. mild form ia _ very prevalent just now, six cases in Milton being .reported to the Borough Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening. Turnips. — Some farmers are experiencing a difficulty in getting stock tc eat off their turnips, and the sowing wheat, on turmp land is likely to be delayed ir> consequence. Lighting the Borough. — As the result of the report submitted by the Mayor and* Cr Parlane, who in company with ex-Cr Henderson recently visited several northern towns to inquire into the possibilities lof acetylene gas for town lighting, a . special meeting of the Council is to be held shortly to reconsider the whole quesj tion. The report was on the whole favourable towards acetylene gas as a means of lighting a small town, / its cheapness and" efficiency being alike commented on. Debate. — A spirited debate took place in the Council Chambers on August 6, between representatives from tlw ParliaI mentary Union and the V.M.C.A Literary and Debating Society. The subject for debate was. '' Is Wai -V a Necessity To-day?" The Rev J. C. Small acted as chairman and adjudicator. The positive side was taken by the Parliamentary Union and rhe negative by the V.M.C.A.- the leaders oE ' the" former being Messrs W. Kirbv and J". , Cuwie, and of the latter Mr G. W. Johnstone and the Rev -Mr Reader. In addition to those mentioned Messrs J. Wright, W. Miller, S. Caudle, J. B. Norrie, J. Moore, J. Gordon supported tke affirmative. Messrs N. Field, A. G. Gray, E. W. Halford, arid S. Bruce the negative. Tha debate 'throughout was interesting, each side arguing its case forcibly and with no little ability, although the judge had no difficulty in giving his decision in favour of the Parliamentary Union.
