MR GEORGE PAYLING.
CHRISTCHURCH, August 20. Mr George Payling, one of the- most prominent citizens of Christchurch,, who hadi been in somewhat bad health for a long time, died suddenly at his residence, near Bealey avenue, this afternoon. Mr Payling had taken a very active interest in the public affairs of Christchurch for manyyears, and his name was closely associated with the' municipal progress of the cityj S Among the public positons held by Mr Payling were those of Mayor of Christchurch fend chairman of lue Nort-h Canterbury Hospital Board. "Before being elected Mayor. he_ "vas for many years a member, of the Christchurch City Council, and presided as Acting Mayor during Sir John Hall's illness at exhibition time. As member of the City Council he did a great? deal of exceptionally good awork as chairman of the Reserves Committee. Aa Mayor he entered with great vigour and! enthusiasm into the movement whichv largely through his efforts-/ resulted in the; inauguration of the -high-pressure .water supply system, which is now being in* stalled in the city and suburbs. On .the Hospital Board, where probably he did most of his public work",-fi«* sjbowed a yer y< sympathetic feeling towards the scheme for the establishment of the Consumption! Sanatorium, and in other ways he did! much to help those in distress. He wa« also intimately associated with the administration of sport and trotting in Christchurch, aud as chairman of the New Zealand Trotting Association he did goo* work. At the receot elections he was ac-. corded a seat upon the TVamway Board.
