A PAWN TICKET TRANSACTION.

ALLEGED FALSE DECLARATION.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 6.

John William Smith, a young man, was charged at the Police Court with making a false declaration before a justice of the peace. i Peter F. Dunne, billiard saloon keeper, ' stated that in May last lie had arranged i with accused, who was a professional boxer, to train him for a match against Griffin, and they had taken a house at ( New Brighton for that purpose. On ' July 7, in witness's billiard saloon, accused ' produced two pawn tickets, and asked witness to lend him some money on them. Witnef* advanced him £2 10s. On thenight of July 9, after tliis fight, -witness went to Grand's pawnshop to get th© ■ medals, and was told that Smith hadf j taken them away half an hour previously. j Frederick Plummer, assistant in Grand's. ; pawnshop, stated that accused had come to the K'hop and told him that he had lost his tickets. Witness told him h© '. would require a declaration to that effect, signed by a J.P. Accused shortly after-. i wards returned with a declaration (proj duced), and had then been handed the ! medak.

William Barnett, J.P., gave evidence as to signing a declaration as to the loss of the ticket?.

Accn.-ed pleaded " Not guilty," andl was committed for trial, bail beingallowed—himself in £25 and one surety, of £25.
