UNSEAWORTHY VESSELS.
I WELLINGTON, August 12. i In "the* "Magistrate's Court this after ! noon the Collector of Customs prosecuted ' Sebastian " Newton' on charges of— (1) Sending the ketch Rona to sea in such an unseaworthy state that lives were likely to be endangered, and (2) being a party" to" sending the vessel to sea. Mr Myers prosecuted and Mr Herdman defended. It was stated on behalf of the prosecution that the case was a serious one. Th« ketch belonged to Mr Ruso, but waa under charter to defendant and another to proceed to Palliser Bay to attempt to salvage the Ben Avon. The vessel lelfc port in a leaking condition, and foundered in Palliser Bay. Fortunately the crew reached shore in safety. Defendant pleaded " Not guilty," nnd was- committed to the Supreme Court for trial. _________«_»
