AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON.
WELLINGTON, August l€. The Auckland and Wellington representative Hockey teams met yesterday, and after a good game, of which the visitors
.had, if anything, the best, the result was a diraw— one goal each. The weather was fine but windy. From the bully-off Wellington soon gained a footing- in the circle. Bogle was responsible for passing in to G. Davies, who took a, shot tor goal. It was a good effort the ball just travelling outside the" post. After some pretty pass? ing work by the Auckland forwards, Wellington returned ■to the attack. The Yellows were aga^n in $he circle^ where Bogl«
made a good but unsuccessful shot, the ball struck the goalkeeper's foot and went Over the post. The Blues rallied, an 3 their .front row men swept down the field, the bail passing from stick to stick as they proceeded. Wellington saved by conceding a corner The Yellows responded, and should have scored as the result of neat combination between) Elliott and Davies. A misunderstanding between tha two marred a likely score. The Auckland backs soon afterwards had to again exert their best defence, which proved equal to the call. From a free hit Mather, for Auckland, sent in a~ fair shot. Two more excellent attempts by the northerners followed, Smyth and Murdoch, the two wingers, being the smiters. The latter'^ hit -was true, but was admirably 6aved by Dwyer. Bloomfield, Auckland's goalkeeper, also had an opportunity, to save an equally meritorious stroke, tins time from Elliott's stick. Play was •very fast, and was immediately in Wellington territory. Here Dwyer saved by kicking the ball out, thus frustrating a dangerous rush. The first spell ended without score. In the second spell the' visitors were aggressive fcr a while, but Bogle relieved by dashing down the right win#- He centred smartly to Elliott, who, in turn, icansferred to G." Davies. The last-named cleverly evaded both full back and coalkeepor, the ball finding the net. Wellington 1 goal, Auckland nil. Davi«6 secured from the bully-off and broke away. He passed to Elliott, who by olever s&ck play got near the post, but hiß shot missed. Auckland now livened up perceptibly ' and severely tested the Wellington defence. Hickson. Hmrty, and Dwyer were very sound, and kept their opponents out for a while. Dwyer saved one likely attempt, but after a succession of shots Mather penetrated his defence. Wellington 1 goal, Auckland 1 goal. Stimulated by-success, the northerners were mfcre persistent in attack. Wellington relieved, and Elliott, by a judicious .lit out to the right wing, made a pretty opening. Both Wheatley and Bogle, howover, failed in shooting. ' Jusr on time Wellington was awarded a penalty corner, but Elliott's shot was. smothered. Time was instantly called, thus completing an excellent game with both sides' even. Mr K. C. Morpeth was the referee.
