ROSS FLAT PUMPING. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
GREYMOUTH, August 12. As a result of the visit of Mr Buckley and other officers of the Telegraph Department a number of details in connection with the transmission scheme had to bo changed, the principal one being the erection of some half-dozen heavier poles where it was thought the transmission line might, under certain circumstances, prove somewhat weak. These alterations are now in hand, and should be completed in the course of a few days. It is expected that the actual pifinping operations will commence on Tuesday, when the two big pumps, somewhat vulgarity called " Dirty Dick " and " Gentle Annie," will be set in full motion. It "was proposed that the official opening cere-mony-should take place about the 28th of this month, but it has now been .practically' decided for Wednesday, September 8. Arrangements are being made for, special trains to ran on that day to and -from Ross. Arrangements , will also "be made for enter- ■ taininp stuireholrtera and invited guests.The directors invited the Hon. R. M'Kenzie to perform the opening ceremony, butf notice has baen received that official business and 'preparation for the opening of Parliament prevents him accepting the invitation. He. however, conveyed his best wishes for the succpss nf the venture. HOKITIKA,. Au&ust 16. The strengthening of the Ross Goldfield* transmission line to comply with the reqniremieats of the Government inspection is expected to be finished on Thursday, when pumping- operations will be com' meneed. The formal opening 1 ceremony in connection with 'this great undertaking has been fixed for September 8.
