FEDERAL OLD AGE PENSIONS.
EXCLUSION OF MAORIS
WELLINGTON, August 12.
The Hon. J. Carroll (Acting Prim* Minister) has sent the following cablegram to Mr Detfein {Prime Minister of Australia) :—": — " The New Zealand Government regrets to learn by cable that the Federal Government has seen fit U exclude Maoris from the benefits of the old-age pension scheme. In New Zealand the Maoris enjoy equal pensions and legal privileges with, the European popu-^ lation ; therefore the exclusion teems an unfair restriction,' especially as we da not place any special restriction on an Australian native-born, and hence an aboriginal native Australian would bo entitled to a peHfaion under our law Th? characteristic disinclination of Maoris t« permanently reside outside their own lana reduces the prospect of any call on youi pension fund on their account to a mini* mum."' • '
