THE COMMONWEALTH
MELBOURNE, August 13. The State Governor "(Sir T. Gibson-Ca.r-nrichael) opened the Premiers' Conference.. His speech and those of Mr Wade (New South Wales) and Mr Kidstori (Queensland) dwelt upon the importance of the deliberations, as the whole of Australia was waiting for a settlement of the financial problem. Mr Murray (Victoria) was elected president. After the opening ceremonies, the conference deliberated in private. August 16. The Premiers' Conferene-j is discussing the suggestion that the Commonwealth be invested with certain powers dealing with industrial matters. Mr Wade, reviewing the question, said that all the States, with the exception of Tasmania, had power to provide a .living wage. If Tasmania could see 'her way to establish the necessary industrial machinery, she would destroy the only substantial argument for vesting the Federation with powers which the States now enjoy.
