An inquest was conducted this afternoon on the body of Charles Barry , M'Cartby, who committed suicidie in Mrs i Wright's boarding-house, Ponsonby, on the previous day by swallowing a poison. > The circumstances of the euicfde were that j deceased came from England to ask Miss I Wright's hand in marriage, and, after j being rejected, took some prussic acid in her mother's house. A dramatic incident which preceded this rash act was narrated at the" inquest by Miss Evelyn M. Wright, I who, when asked by the coroner if she ! could add anything to the evidence given j by the other witnesses, said there was j something she wished to say Site stated that after an interview with deceased she and her mother left the room. Deceased called her back, and asked her to come close to him. She went up to him, and he caugh.t her arm, and presented a revolver loaded in five chambers to her left temple. She knocked the weapon up, and 'it fell on the floor. She picked . it up and unloaded it, and deceased snatched the cartridges from her, but did not regain the weapon. . She knew the mechanism of the revolver, which deceased had parchased in England six or seven years ago. Deceased, when dosnossassed of the weapon, fell on his knees before her, and asked for forgiveness for attempting to ( take her life. He asked her not to tell anyone, and that was why she had kept the incident secret. Deceased w-ent out for a minute or two, and came back apparently calm. She met him at the door and asked him to oromlse not to threaten her mother with fhe revolver. He said he was qnite happy now, and would go home (she took this to mean England). She took him tea and notepaper, and said she would wait while he wrote. He j said " No " ; he could not collect his j thoughts, and asked her to leave the : room. T» the Coroner: T was just in time to snatch the revolver, which he had cocked. Just a touch of the finger would have done it.
