CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON.
CHRISTCHURCH, August 8. The hockej match between Wellington and Canterbury was played at Sydenham Park yesteiday in the presence of about 2000 spectators. The ground was ;n; n excellent order, and the game was very fast and even throughout, although Wellington had perhaps tho better of the play in the toeorK) speli. Canterbury won the tcss and defended the --outhern in the first half. From the bully off Wellington obtained possession, Snn the centring, but the ball was returned veil into the Wellington twentyfive by Oram. Wellington were shortly afterwards penali c <;d for obstruction, but Parton returned, finding the line near midv.ay. Oram passed to Hulbert, but the latter was penalised for offside. The ball was then taken into the Wellington circle, hut Kibblewhite saved nicely. After some preUy play in the Wellington circle, where an almost certain shot wae saved by Kibblewhito. Canterbury again returned to the attack, Hulbert having a shot, which went wide. Smythe was noticeable for a good dribble till he lost the ball. King shot out to Loader, but Throp, who was playing a
1 fine game, heat his opponent. Shortly after this Oram was penalised for a knock-on, and Campbell, when taking the free hit, found the circle. Rankin centred the ball, but Kibblewhite saved neatly, and returned to midfield. Even play followed until the ball was taken into the Yellows' circle, where Patrick had a shot, which was well saved by Dwyer. Hulbert rushed in, however, and found the net nicely. Canterbury set up another attack, but were penalised for offside play. Beare obtained possession of i the ball, and after a good dribble failed to pass, and finally lost it. Organ, following up, had a shot, which was well stopped by Bellamy, Throp eventually finding the line about midway. Ford hit the ball well up the field, and Smith centring nicely to Hulbert, the latter had a tussle with Parton, who conceded a corner, from which. Hulbert managed to register his second score. Half-time was called soon afterwards. Starting again, Throp was noticeable for some good play, but Patrick failed* to field a good pass, and the ball was returned by Kibblewhite. Canterbury returned to the attack, Smith having a shot ■which was well stopped by Dwyer. Wellington then set up an attack, but Campoell saved again and again. Ford, rushing 1 up well, put the ball in the Wellington circle, but Kibblewhite returned. Wellington then kept up a fairly consistent attack, in which King and Christie were noticeable, the former hittin? to Beare. who had a, shot, which, was well saved by Bellamy- The Wellington, forwards seemedl rather slower in the circle, and Campbell managed to pass to Smith, who hit it the full length of the field. Kibblewhite returned nicely, and Wellington were Again on the attack. Organ, following up fast, had hard luck* in not scoring. The ball was returned by Campbell to the ■Wellington circle", but Smith was rather slow in getting; his hit in. Canterbury had another try, but a rush by Hulbert and Jacobs was well stopped by Kibblewhite, the ball being well hit up the field. Beare then had a. shot, but Bellamy cleared nicely. Smythe was penalised repeatedly for offside play. On Wellington resuming the attack, the ball was finally passed to Davies, who, after a scramble in the circle, had a shot, bud Bellamy saved. Even play followed until the Canterbury forwards made a rush fois the Yellows' circle, Paston conceding a corner. Shortly after this time was called, the fame ending in a win for Canterbury by 2 goals to nil.
