Gloriously fine weather and r splendid attendance ushered in tha Grand .National meeting-, and the .rack was fine and firm for this tims of the year._ Gifengariff was •ant out favourite for the Hunters' Hurdles, ■but he gai'.ed to gain a. place. Auratus won the Trial Hurdles comfortably. Kelso was galloping well when he fell at tne back of tha course, and Pikopo, wh< lay a longway from the leaders in the early stages, made up a lot of ground at the finish. North-East madfe t one-horse jraoe of the Winter Cup. Eta was about fifth out fronr the .barrier, but he quickly joined the leaders. Penates wat smartest out, but was steadied. Federal took charge- early in. the race, and carried on the running until reaching- . the straight,, where North-East quickly had his measure. Penates looked too big, and he' finished last. The winner waa a good favourite, and nothing- hadl a chance with him. Te Arai' was sent out favourite for the Grand National Steeplechase, and' seemed to have a winning chanc9 up to about half a mile from home. He was perhaps made a bit too much use of, and would be hard to beat over a shorter course. Lc Beau fell when going strongly, and Capitol was also travelling well when he came clown a mile fronr home. Eurus cama down at the first of the stand doubles when going well with the leaders. Nadador cut off thsi corners, and that materially helped her to achieve success. El Dorado ran a good horse, but Nadador won with fomethirg t< spare. Te Arai cou!d not pace it home with the two after being a disputant for the leadership over the first two miles and a-half. The Tally-ho was a duel between Gammon and Barney, and the latter, falling at the last fence, left hia opponent to canter hoiroa. Compass won th< Jumpers' Flat in excellent style, and put u\ a gocd gallop. Scotty was favourite, but when apparently hard ridden in the straight 'he could make no 'nupiessior on the leaders. The only one outside the winner that appeared to be travelling well was Farley Grove. Lovjll won the Enfield comfortably with fcomething to spare, an<l Xyland won ih» Avonhead Handicap in a runaway manner. The latter is ver3~ &marr over a short course.
