CASE OF PERJURY.
YOUNG MAN'S PLEA. WELLINGTON, August 6. The charge of perjury preferred againrt the young man, Pei cy Jones Reynolds, was heard in ths Magistrate's Court, before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M. The alleged -offence was that during the hearing ot a charge of assault stated to have been committed by Reynolds on Frank Johnson, accused swore : "I was married to Florrie Wyllie about Christmas, 1903. We were married at a house. No. 5. Dixon street- I can't say who married us. I still say I am legally married to Florence Wyllie." Evidence as to accused's statements in the witrue^-box was submitted j by Constable Jones, court orderly, and ' Sergeant Dale. A written .statement waa j produced by Sub-inspector Norwood, in ' which accused said that he had ialtely i sworn in order to protect the girl. E\i- ' dence was also given by Mr G. G. Hodgkins, registrar of births, mariiage?, and deaths, that no such marriage as stated had been registered. Accused, who was represented by Mr I. W. Jackson, pleaded "Guilty," and v;,is committed to the Supreme Court lor sentence. B^iil was fixed in oi i hiuety for £50. As a rule an elephant works from the ago of 12 to the aj?e of 80. The average specimen can haul 15 tons, lift half a ton, and carry three tons*
