THE MONEY MARKET.

The official returns of exports and imports to June 30 (the Trade Review says) sho-w a substantial increase irs the former and a decrease in the latter, resulting in an excess of exports over imports of ov?r £2,400,000, following on simiiar movements in the March quarter. The totals for the six months ending on June 30, apart fro.il specie, compare as follows: — Exports January 1 to June 30 ... £12.292,44- ', Imports ... ... ~ - 6,785,882 Excess of exports — ... . £5,508,562 The corresponding returns a year ago showed an excess of only £1,760,522. Ins increased excess of the present season brings, of course, a substantial alleviation to the financial position. The last hah' of the year— July to December—is the slack export season, and already the shipments of wool, meat, and dairy 'produce have assumed greatly reduced proportions. The exports of grain will this year come to the rescue to a substantial amount, and on the other hand it is practically certain that importation will continue on a reduced soale. Prospects for pastoral and agricultural production doiring the coming season are exceptionally favourable, and given paying prices m the markets of consumption a return to a fair measure of prosperity is hopefully looked forward to for New Zaaland in the year 1909-10.
