Two members of the Federal Senats and six members of the House of Representatives have declined to draw th© extra £200 in salary which was voted in August. The Chief Secretary states that the gaol population of the State is 600 less than it was 32 years ago, though the popu-< lation has increased by half a million. he Government has had to close -the gaols in three centres, one being turned into a butter factory. March 9. A boy named Rowe, who was riding a bicycle at Richmond, was impaled on the 6haft of a passing vehicle and killed. A man n^med Price collided with a cab a I Richmond and was killed. SYDNEY, March 5. Archdeacon Abbott's letter of resignation has stirred up a lot of local feeling. His letter to the Parochial Council says: " I have always done fully what I promised. Too much ha 6 been made out of a small matter." SYDNEY, March 6. Three men have been convicted on a chirgo of receiving the proceeds of the jewellery robbery at Hordern's, and have been sentenced — two to five years and the other to three yeaTs' imprisonment, with hard labour. March 9. A fishing boat capM&ed at Newcastle, and two men named Tape and Burkitt were drowned. ADELAIDE, March 7. The barque Inveresk has arrived from Delagoa Bay with fever aboard. During the voyage one seaman 3ied, and six others were attacked. They are recovering. The voyage occupied 62 days, and the barque missed a charter. Heavy floods and railway washouts are reported from the far north. BRISBANE, March 6. Exceptionally heavy rains hive fallen between Roma and Cunnamul'a. The rivers aie flooded, and much of the country is submerged. The railways are blocked. PERTH, March 4. Two aboriginals have been discovered at Signet Bay in an advanced stage of leprosy.
