SHOOTING SENSATION.
A MAN SERIOUSLY 'WOUNDED. RECOVERY CONSIDERED HOPELESS^ CHRISTCHURCH. March 8. A great sensation was caused in Lyttelj^ ton about a quarter to 5 on Saturda-vf afternoon, -when three revolver ehots were! heard in Oxford street. " _ |) It turned out that a man named Alex**; ander Jamed Muir had been shot at andj : wounded. The origin of the .^fFair was a ' quarrel between Muir and a man named j Frederick Hall some months ago. On .that occasion Hall affronted Muir and I broke hi« jaw, and for doing so received thiee months' imprisonment. HaJi had not been long out of jjaol, and according 1 tc> Muir he had met Hall repeatedly, but bad not spoken to him. , On Saturday afternoon Muir wae stands* ing on the front doorstep of Clark's boards ing-house in Oxford street, when Hall came along and said: "You think you/ are going to get out of this, but you ftref not. He then drew a revolver and fired! three shots at Muir, two of them taking effect. . t Hall then ran away and hid hiineelf ir| a right-of-way off Norwich quay.. OonVsiables Moriarty and Wilson gave chaaev and as Constable Moriarty approached hirof Tlall pulled the trigger of his revolver^ twice in sucoeesion, but the weapow! missed fire. He was then arrested token to the lock-up. | Muir was taken into Clark's boarding*, , house and attended to by a doctor, who* states that he is mortally wounded. His/ depositions were taken. j Muir and Hall were wharf lumpers, an<f j there has been enmity between them eveP. since the quarrel referred to occurred. >J Hall came out of gaol in January last; ' and although the men met almost daily a* Clark's boarding-house for meals they, never spoke to each other. Muir used to live there and Hall went there for meala ° Muir was attended by both Dr Newell and Dr Upham, and the latter stated that he had two bullet wounds in tne body., One bullet entered above the liver and l th£ other, which had evidently been firedr from behind, lodged in the back, tearing? * Latest advices reported the victim to be in a rtate of collapse and his recovery is considered hopeless.
