HIDE SALES.

MELBOURNE, March 5. At the hide sales, stout heavy end medium ■orts were firm, but kips were from id to Jd per 1b lower. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. (Limited) rejport as follows: — We submitted a large catalogue at our stores, Cumberland street, on Thursday. There were no hides of exceptional merit offering, the bulk of the catalogue being made up of farmers' small consignments. We had also several large lines of boners. Hides of good substance met an extremely brisk sale, prices showing a rise of fully £& per Ib, but inferior, badly flayed, and Bloppy sorts were neglected, with values from ■Id to id per lb lower. Quotations: Heavy Btout ox, 6d to 7Jd per lb; heavy do. s£d to 6d; medium, 4jd to 5Jd; light, 3fd to 4*d; fceavy cow, 4£d to 4|d; light, 31d to 4id; inferior, ljd to 2Jd; yearling, 3£d to s|d; calfskins, 3d to sd. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. (Limited) report as follows: — We held our usual fortnightly hide sale in our Maclaggan fetreet store on Thursday, when we offered a. catalogue of 676 hides to a representative gathering of the trade. There was very ■spirited bidding for all classes of hides, but onore especially -for stout, heavy ox, which Bold at up to 7Jd per lb, and to £2 6s 6d ;per hide. Our total offering was cleared under the hammer. There was good competition for the bulk of 'our offerings, and prices realised for all classes of •well-flayed hides in good condition wer,e from par to a id per lb higher than al our last sale. . The above quotations apply only to hides which are well-flayed and in good condition, slqppy, badly-flayed, and otherwise damaged hides being from Jd to lid per lb lower, according to condition. The Otago Farmers' Cc-operative Association oi New Zealand (Ltd.) report as follows: — We held our umal foitnightly hide sale at our sores, Crawford street, on Friday, when we submitted a large catalogue of tides, yearling*, and calfskins to- a representative gatherings of buyers. Bidding waa keen throughout the sale, and good* quality tides sold at an advance of from Jd to Jd per lb on late rates, but light, inferior, and badly-flayed hides were easier, and sold at from id to Jd per lb lower. Our catalogue was made up principally of country consign^ znents, with a few butchers' lots. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Ltd.) report as follows: — We submitted a catalogue of about 400 hides at our usual fortnightly sale on Friday. The trade •was well represented and bidding was extremely brisk for good hides. Prices, as compared with last sale, show an advance on xeallj prime hides of from Jd to Id per lb, but on slippy and badly flayed lines prices .■were much on a par with those ruling at 3s.st sale. A few of our best prices were : Ox— one 801b, 7gd; two 721b. 7Jd; -five 671b, 7Jd:;"2O 58lb, 6Jd. We quote: Heavy stout ox, 6jd to 7Jd', heavy, s£d to 6id; medium, **d to 5Jd; light, 4d to 42d; calfskins, 3d .to sd. The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand (Ltd.) report as follows: — We held our regular sale of hides on Thursday, March 5, when we offered a good catalogue to a full attendance of buyers. Competition was good for prime quality, but inferior had not the same demand. We obftaizfeed 7|d per lb for a line of four ox averaging 701b, and 6gd for a line of six ox Averaging 571b. For cows our best price- was 4id for one lot aevraging 411b, but in these jpre had nothing above medium quality. Quotations: Prime heavy ox, 7d to 7£d per lb; medium, 4Jd to 6d>; light, 4d to 4Jd; inferior land staggy, 2d to 3id; prime heavy cow, HJd to sd; medium, 4d to 4gd; light, 3!d to 4gd; yearling, 3Jd to sd; calfskins, 2*d to Rd. Messrs St-ronach, Morris, and Co. (Ltd.) Veport as follows: — We held our sale of hides at our stores, Crawford street, on Friday, Bth inst., when we submitted a catalogue totalling 488. The attendance of buyers was Srather less than usual, but competition was good and prices all round compared favourably with our last sale's. Our top price for ox hides was 7Jd, at which price we sold cne weighing 701b. We also sold 12 67' s and one 66 at 7d; two 63's at 6gd; one 71 and one 64 at 6Jd; 22 from 61 to 721b at 6gd, snd 32 60's and 62*s at 6Jd. In cow hides our •top price was 4gd, paid for heavy weights. The following are actual prices paid at our B&le: — Prime stout heavy ox hides, 6Jd to 7Jd; good heavy do, 6d to 63d; medium ■weight, 5Jd to 5Jd; extra good, to 6Jd; light weight, 4Jd to 42d ; ataggv and inferior, Id to 3id; best heavy cow hides, 4J to 4|d; medium and light weight do, 4Jd to 4§d; inferior do, ljd to 3d; yearling, 3£d to 4Jd; calfskins, Id to 4£d. Messrs Waters, Ritchie, and Co. report having started their hide sale on Friday, but owing to having a very large catalogue

only part of the sale was completed, and will be continued this (Saturday) morning. There was a good attendance of buyers, and competition, was very keen for all descriptions of well flayed clean hides. We secured the two highest prices obtained in Dunedin for some considerable time, obtaining 8d for an ox hide weighing 76".b, and 7£d for another weighing 721b. We also topped the market in cow hides with sgd. The following «re some of our best prices as far as the sale has gone: — One ox, 8d; one do, 7d; one do, 71d; one do, 7£d; two do, 7Jd ; seven do, 6?d; five do, 6Jd; 16 do, 6|d; three do, 6kl; seven do, 6gd; four do, 6Jd; two do, 6Jd ; seven do, 6d per lb. Our catalogue was made up of 833 hides and 345 yearling calfskins, and we quote as follows: — Extra, stout heavy ox, from 6gd to 8d; heavy do, 51d to 6Jd; medium. do, 4|d to s|d; light do, 4d to 41d; heavy cow, 4Jd to s|d: medium and light do. 4d to 4|d; inferior and damaged ox and cow, from Id to 3d per lb.
