March 6. —The harvest is about over and very little will be left in stock after this week. The weather, taken all through, has been excellent, and the grain has been secured in first-class order. Welcome Rain.—The nice rain that fell during the latter part of last month did an immense amount of good to the country. Grass is coming away again, and turnips, ■ffhioh caused growers a great deal of anxiety during the droughty period, have recovered Apjenaidly, and now promiee to be up to the average of other years. The rain that fell •was not heavy enough to start the creeks running, so that a good many settlers are -still vwry badly - off for w«tei foT their stock, $ojne of them having to drive their animals two or three miles daily to the nearest stream. It some of our fellow men had to walk a few miles fox a drink one trip a day would be enough for them, perhaps. Changes. —Mr R. Meek has leased, with a purchasing clause, a portion of his farm' to 4 Central Otago man who intends going in for dairying. Seeing that a number of newg«ra to the district are similarly inclined, I quite possible that the old Fairfax dairy ory, which caused serious financial loss to original promoters owing to the low price i&C cheese whioh ruled during the few years of the company's existence, may be brought into use again. School Affairs.—The school being closed for
the harvest holidays, the committee are tak- ' ing the chance afforded by the children's absence to concrete a- broad path from the madn road to the school building. It will be an improvement that was badly needed. The etationmaster'g house, at which there is ■• small army of men at work, is to be finished at the end of the present month. Bunny.—The trapping season opens in a few days, and local trappers are getting i ready fox their work. Judging by the numbers of rabbits to be seen big catches will be made. ' I I , j I . j , ' ! !
