The long apell of dry wea/ther was broken ' up at the beginning of the week, when steady rain set in, and continued for over 40 hours. Fine weather now prevail*, and as the result of the rains winter feed will be greatly ! assisted all over the district. The rain seems to have been general, and water for mining is now plentiful. At Ma.takanui the sluicing claims have again started, and Bhould be able to work till the frosts set in. In consequence of the heavy rains a rise in the river took place, and this will invent I th« gorge dredges from starting until the ] river recedes again. Both the Molyneux Hydraulic and the Alexandra Lead inte.xl to resume dredging on Monday. These two diedges were compelled ' to ceaco work oui'ig to the water in the paddock being low but, ss a sufficient supply is now on haiid, dredging will be again commenced. Owing to the annual boiler inspection now being held in tli:? £L=trict, all the dredges will lose time through having to slop work. The examination for drivers' certificates will be h!ed by Mt Ramsay, boiler inspector, on the 20th inst.
