BIENNIAL CONFERENCE WELLINGTON. F^ 17. The biennial Conference c' :algamated Society of Railway was opened to-day. Nineteen tk .\cre present, representing brancheo the society in all parts of the Dominion. Mr Mack, the newly-elected seoretary, was present, and the conference decided that he should take up his duties at once. Mr Edwards, the late N secretary, was appointed as Mr Mack's assistant for the conference, and was also granted 12 months' leave on full pay. Several hundred motions appear on the agenda paper,* and it is probable that the conference Will last for a fortnight. A large number of 'the motions relate to wages and classification. There are half a dozen motions as echoes of the M'Cullough case, in favour of Government servants being given full rights of free speech. The conduct of the society's journal — the Railway Review — is to come up for discussion. The conference i 6 not open to the press.
