HAORI CLERGYMEN.
A STRONG APPEAL. AUCKLAND, February 29. In the course of an address on tfils Native ministry at the meeting of the Tflj Aute Association, Mr Thornton made ail impassioned appeal to all the Maoris tq make an effort to support their own minis* tera. A possible reason for the preaeoff lack of men, he said, was that the > Natiy& ministry was underpaid. No Maori minis-* ter, if married, should receive less- thaif £100 a year He knew, the Maori wa«j( generous, especially towards something ha could see, as a building', but it was mudi more necessary to have minister* thail churches. Other speakers strongly sup* ported Mr Thornton, and the following resolution was carried : — " That thi« oorij feronoe supports the president's address oj» the importance of an effioient Maori olergy* aod urges that efforts be m*d« to rais* their salaries."
