Heavy rain foil most of the day, and the garden party welcome to the bandh was postponed till Friday. The E flat cornet solo resulted as follows: — S. Williams (Woolston), 66 points .. 1 B. Simpson (Mastci-ton), 61 points ... 2 "W. Nicholls (Stratford). 58 points . . . . 3 The Theatre Royal was crowded to-night for the B flat cornot solo competition, which resulted thus: — F. Fox (Hastings), 62 points 1 H. Chrystall (Wauganui) and A. h^rryman "(Nelson). 61 points (equal) ... 2 Also competed: W. Thomas (Mornington) 53. L. Jorgenscn (First Battalion) 59. Jae. Also competed : G . Boyd (Wanganui) 53. To-night the first selection, " Gems of Schumann," wore played on the Recreation Sports Ground under electric light. Th*terraces wore lined to the crushing point with spectators and presented a magnificent spectacle. The weather v.as beautifully calm, and the softest pa-^iiges were vividly distinct from c\cry point of vantage in the huge natural amphitheatre. .After all the bands had been heard, the judge placed them as follows: — A GRADE. Palmerston North .. ..... 132 Marton 129 Auckland Mounted 127 Manaia v ■ .. 123 NEW PLYMOUTH, February 27. The euphonium solos were taken this morning. Seven competed. Results: — Restall (Woolston), 64 points, 1. Cudby (Taranaki), 63 points, 2. Hughes (Neleon), 62 points, 3. The military marching competition attracted an attendance of upwards of 7000, who lined the terraces, presenting a very pretty sight. The march" Nibba" was capitally rendered by most of the 11 competitors. Result : —
TROMBONE TRIO. TVanganui. 74 Joints 1 Auckland Ist BattaJion, 73 points.. 2 "Woo'ston 71, Monungton 70. Taranaki 69, and Masterton 66 al=o competed. February 28. The final test selection, "William Tell," was played to-night in the Recreation Grounds. There was a large attendance, The total gate takings were £700. Results : A GRADE. First prize, £100 (most points in two selections). Mornington, 292 1 Auckland Ist Battalion, 286 ... 2 Woolston, 275 ... 3 Nelson Garrison 274, Taranaki Garrison 259, Hastings 256, Masterton 255 also competed. The Benson Shield, for highest points in music, including the March, was won by Auckland Battalion with 381 points. B GRADE. First prize, £30. Palmorston North, 257 1 Auckland Mounted Rifles, 257 ... 2 Manaia, 251 3 Marton 250 also competed. The Boosev Shield, for most points in all the nausio in B Grade, goes to Palmerston North. The result was announced at 0.23 a.m.
