Rains at Reefton on Saturday checked the. bu=h fires. HOKITIKA, February 22. At Hokitika there was a heavy downpour, acoompanied by a severe thunderstorm. In about two hours and a-half 2.62 in fell. CHRISTCHURCH, February 22. Rain has been falling at Ashburton, but it seems as far off as ever here. No rain of any consequence has fallen since October, and the prospect of winter feed is now hopeless.
Our Waitahuna correspondent cays: — " Steady rain set in on Friday morning, and continued till about 5 a.m. on Saturday, benefiting tho turnip crop and augmenting- the water supply for mining purposes. The rain has caught many of the farmers in the midst of their harvesting-, still no doubt they will he pleased to see it, a-3 the grass and turnips were much in need of it. The harvest throughout the district promises to be a good one. Heavy yields bid fair to be the rule."
