NEW ZEALAND IMPORTS.

The value of imports into New Zealand during the last quarter of 1907 compares as follows with recent corresponding periods: j Excluding December. Specie. Specie. Total. Quarter £ £ £ 1907 .. 4 521,873 „ 51,424 .. 4,573,297 1906 .. 4,054.777 .. 114.315 .. 4,169 092 1905 .. 3,327,838 .- 147,213 .. 3,475,051 1904 .. 3,246,039 .. 8,957 ..- 3,254,996 Tho total, exclusive of specie, shows an increase equal to about 11£ per cent, on the 1906 fig-ures. Following is a four rears' comparison of the values of imports at the several ports of the Dominion: —

The total, apart from specie, shows an increase of £2.236,472, or o\er 15£ per cent , upon 1906, and -£4,060,630, or 32J. per cent., upon 1905. Of the increase for the latest .year £1.779,700, or over 21 per cent., occurs in the North Island. £365,661. or 6 1-3 per cen.t, 111 the South Inland, and £91.111 in parcels post for all ports. The increase is very heaw, though more in the North than in the South Island. It would be interesting to ascertain in what branches of trade it is most prominent, but the Gazette returns give no information as to goods, or classes of imports. >Tlie increase in Customs revenue, indicative of consumption, for the latest year is equal to only a little over 6 per cent., as> against 15? per cent, increase in imports. For the Xorth Island alone it ie over 9 per cent. To #. small extent the Customs revenue suffers from recent remissions, Ana this would affect the ratio of increase by 1 or 2 per cent. Probably, also, the increase in imports may be enhanoed in some measure by higher cost of commodities. On the whole, the figures seem to suggest a possibility of over-importation.
