DOMESTIC HELP WANTED.
APPEAL TO THE MINISTER. AUCKLAND, February 24. A letter has been addressed to the Hon. J. A. Millar (Minister of Labour) by the organising secretary of the New Zealand Women's Guild (Mrs R. Geddes Crawford), who says: — "I desire, on behalf of the - council of the above guild, to state that, being so much interested in the immigration of domestic servants, we have (fathered some interesting facts, and are firmly convinced that there is a crying need for a suitable class of young women who will make not only good workers, but particularly gooa colonists. We consider there is therefore much need of a large amount of discretion and judgment necessary in the selection of the same. We would suggest: (1) That if the Government will pay £12 in place of £9. as already paid, and use its influence with us in inducing a first-class shipping company to reduce the far.es from £19 to £15 for domestic servants, provided that on an average 50 be sent out in each steamer monthly for one year, suitable young women in the British Isles would willingly pay £3 towards their own fare. (2) That the Labpur Department invite all employers of domestic servants who are in need of same to write distinctly their requirements. Realising, as wo do, the urgency of immediate* action on behalf of the women of New Zealand, I again ask that your earliest attention be gixen to this important subject. Servants are so urgently needed that the consequence of delay will he the death of many more , women through overwork, and also many unborn children."
