KAITANGATA FLOWER SHOW.
The following is a list of the officials.— Fieeident, Mt C E Yates, vice-presidents— Dr Fitzgerald, Mr George Aitchison, Mrs C. Bi.=set; secietary, Mr W R Mechaelis; trea=uier, Mr D. P. Clements, committee—Mesdames Geo. Aitchison, A. Bisset, W. R. Mechaehe, Sargeant, Oliver, Miss M 'Robertson, Messrs A. Bisset, Hawke. M.oir, Geo. Oliver, H. Clements, 9arge*nt, R, F. Smaili, J Smaill, Reid, Muir, Hunter, Sharma.n.
The annual summer flower show at Kaitangata is an event which is always looked forward to with pleasant anticipation, not only by inhabitants of the district, but also by lovers of horticulture in neighbouring localities. Correctly speaking, the shew is something more than a mere exhibition of flowers, as it embraces within its scope exhibits of fruit, vegetables, dairy produce, cookeiy, and industrial and art work. Interest is well distributed over all sections of the exhibition, and each year there is good all-round competition. Thursdays show, held in the usual large hall, in point of quahty of exhibits as well as in number, stands out as one of the best exhibitions yet held in the district. The entries were so numerous that the large room at the rear of tlio hall had to be put into requisition and set apart for the display of vegetables. Pot plants were a good and sti iking feature of the show, two laige and well-flowered specimens of the hhum aura turn, some magnificent exhibits of. varieties of asparagus, and greenhouse foliage plants being specially noticeable A liberal display of tables of foliage and flowering plants and cut flowers arranged round the hall also added materially to the general effectiveness of the show. Cut flowers, both in the amateur and open sections weie a strong feature, and it is safe to say that for quality and variety no better all-round blooms have been shown in the distiict. Roses, carnations, dahlias, gladioli, asfeis, stocks, and sweet peas were conspicuous among innumerable specimens of annual blooms. Floral handwork, including bouquets, sprays, buttonholes, decorative baskets, decorative tables, etc.. were excellent, and competition in these clases was close. Exhibits of fruit, owing to the lateness of the season, weie not numerous but the quality of what was shown left little to be desired. Vegetables, dairy produce, and exhibits of local industry and art were fully up to the standard of former yeais. The judging arrangements, however, were not quite so satisfactory as on former occasions, and portion of this function had not been completed when our represntative left at 4.20 p.m., consequently the prize-hst as printed below is not quite complete, and the balance will be published when it comes to hand by post Owing to apparently unavoidable delay in getting exhibits m order and on the stands, the judges were not able to get at their work until well after 1 p.m , and the result was that visitors from neighbouiing districts had only a brief period in which to look over the awards before catching trains to depart for their homes. Among the professional nurserymen who had exhibition tables at the show we noted Messis Howden and Moncrieff and C E. Naish, and a tjtble exhibited by Mr J. T. Ramsay, comprising pot plants and cut flowers, deserves a special word of commendation. Mr A. S. Malcolm. M P., who was introduced by the Mayor (Mr C. E. Yates), formally declared the show open at 3 15 p m to the public for two days. Subjoined is the prize-list as far as piocuiable. — GREENHOUSE PLANTS IN POTS. Amateur Class. Judge: Mr R. Fleming.
