PROSECUTIONS AT LAWRENCE.
A.t Lawrence, on the 24th inst., before Mr Kenrick, S.M., Edward Pearson, licensee of the Waipori Hotel at Waipori, was charged with exposing liquor for sale on, his licensed premises on the Ist inst. Mr Fletcher appeared for the defendant, who pleaded "Guilty." Inspector O'Brien, who oonducted the prosecution, stated that Waiporl wa« a small township about 15 miles from Lawrence. There was no polloe officer thete, and the place had to be supervised by the police in Lawrence. On the night in question Sergeant Higgms and a -constable went out to Waipori at half-past 10, and foo^a the front door of the hotel doea^. They then entered by the back dooT. They found two Europeans and a Chinaman in! the bar parlour. The defendant was in the bar, which was lit up, and was talking to the Chinaman. • The Magistrate said he dad not consider the case one lor endorsement on the license.. He fined the defendant 40b and ootsta (13a). The Chinaman was fined 5s without costs for being on the premises, and the i»«» Europeans (brothers named Cartwrigpnt) were each fined 5s and costs (7s). George White and Thomas Gilleapie Robertson were charged with being found in the Masonic; Hotel at Lawrence after *he hour of closing — namely 10.40 p.m. ■on the 20th inst. Each defendant was fined 59 and costs (7s). .
