GERMAN COLONIES.
BERLIN, February 19. Herr Demberg, speaking in the Reichstag, stated that soon only a, few of theGerman colonies would require Imperial assistance. The trade in the Camercons had mci eased by 40 per cent, last year. Considerable mineral wealth had been discovered in the Caroline and Ladrone Inlands, and there were 40,000,000 tons of phosphates on the island of Nauru alone.
Herr Dernberg promised to try to safeguard 10,000, 0C0 natives in East Africa against any British display of power. He added that if the Government acceded to the wishes of the white farmers the entire labour force of the colony would emigrate to British territory, where the labour conditions were lighter ajid more humane.
