REGULATION OF MOTOR-CAR TRAFFIC. The following letter from Mr S. Fletcher, solicitor, on behalf of Messrs £L. Craig and Co, coach proprietors, was read- — " On the 24th ult., at a bend at the foot of Rae's Junction, damge was done to their coach by a motor-car which gave no notice of its approach. The damage done was slight, but as the coach was full of passengers, a serious accident at this paiticular place might easily have occurred. " My instructions are, looking at the fact that the numbei of motor-cars iismg the I country roads are increasing, to respectfully i point out to you the advisability of making regulations under ' The Motor Regulation Act, 1906.' 1-egula.tsng and covtiolhng the use of such vehicles." Mr Leary appealed in pei c on to support the letter, and, after cxplaiiMiig the urcumstances connected with the incident refered to. said that what they would suggest was that some regulations should bs made affecting such motor traffic, and in this legard he suggested that horse-drawn vehicles should be given the safe side- of the road. He also suggested that danger discs should be erected at places considered dangerous. In this work his firm was prepared to assist. The Chairman thanked Mr Leary for his presence and his offer of assistance in the mattei of electing danger signals. The matter of regulating motor traffic was bping considered, but >ie was not prepared to say, owing to the tentative nature of the legisla1 lion on the subject, that finality would be 1 cached at that meeting. jik cotton's dredgr E Cotton, wrote asking to be allowed to wait on the council in refeience to its demand for the iemo\al of his cLedge fiom load'ine. He had seen Mr Cotton s.nce, and he would not be able to attend. 1 The Chairman said he did not think there was any desire on the part of the council or the peop'.e of Waipori to compel Mr Cotton to go to unnecessary expense in regard to the removal; that he believed if he were to erect a piotection until such time as the conditions were favourable for its removal everybody woiild be satisfied; further, he did not think, from what he had himself seen, that there was any danger to the bridge ironi flood to be anticipated. Cr Knight spoke strongly on the manner in which this matter was being dealt with by the council, and pointed out that in the evrat of st serious accident occunnig it would

be the council and not Mr Cotton who would bo held responsible ; that the deviation to reach Waipori was through Mi Cotton's freeho'd, and that the privilege of us'ng this, as 111 a pievious instance, might be withchawn at any mgment. He vas strongly oppossd to iuiy extension of time being allowed, e^i cciahy in the f iu 3of their assur.u>ce to the Minos Department that lmrnediats would I 3 taken for its rcraoi al It w.is ultimately lesolved that the matter be lelt in absjoncc till next meeting to a How of n'embeis \isitmg the locality OExrs\L C.u-itab'e aid wa« recommended 111 the ca«e of a widevi dad four children resident 111 Gabriels Riding On the motion of Crs Hcwatt and M'lnerncy, it \\.~.s resolved that contiact 735 be cancelled and deposit forfeited unless work was commenced within one month — Cr Bennett* said there was too much laxity in regaid to carrying out contracts, and he strongly advocated a more stringent fulfi'- I merit of the conditions as vegaids time of completion On the motion of Cr Knight, the engineer wrs instructed to visit the new settlement, Lee Stream Flat, and report on the road requ.iemeiits It was resolved that tl.e engineer instruct «.omecne to disinfect a house at 'luapeka West wheie a child had died from an infectious disease. At the conclusion of th© ordinary meeting an informal meeting was- held for the purpose of receiving a draft of the proposed new boundaries as suggested by the engineer. Ihe trustees, while desirous of doing everything rasoiiabie in connection with the constniction of the read, would prefer to keep the land rather than be put to much trouble 111 connection with the passing of the plan, and trusted the council would see its way to pass the plan so that they might po on with the sale at once. — It was pointed out by Cr Philip that the £30 offered by Mr Ritchie was not in the nature of a deposit, but was offered as an amount to com plete the work and relieve the trustees of further liability. — Mt A- R.
