NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWING.
AUCKLAND, February 11. Word has been received from Marakopa of the narrow escape from drowning of eight lads— John Sco^t, Gibson, Granville, Williams, August, Lane, Bayne, and Harper. They procured a flat-bottomed boat and went across the bar with the intention of fishing. A wa\e capsized the boat and the occupants were all thrown into the water. Bayne and Gibson were the first to reach the shore. Lane, Scott, and Williams (a Maori) clung to the boat, which became anchored. The last-named dived and out the painter. Then the boat started to drift to sea. Soort saw a large shark, and called out to Williams, who said: "I have a sheath knife I'll settle him." The lads speak in high terms of the manner in which Vv llliams behaved. Bayne, almost exhausted, was just sinking when he grasped an oar thrown to him. Harper (who is the son of the diver who lost hiV life in recovering the Elingamite treasure) was also nearly drowned- being caught in the backwash.
Rose M'Grath gave great help in rescuing the boys.
