COST OF A TANGI.
QUESTION OF MAORI CUSTOM. WELLINGTON, February 12. 'The cost of the tangi over the late Tamafaau Mahupuku was the. subject of argument in the Supreme Court to-di.v. Mahupuku died early in 1904, and the tangi lasted for three or four months. Mr Loasby, a storekeeper at Greytown, sued the Public Trustee (as administrator of the estate) for £111 3s 6d, for goods sold and delivered in connection with the tangi. Mr Jamee, S.M.. gave judgment in favour of the plaintiff for £92 Is 6d. Against that decision the Public Trust 3e appealed, and the- question which is being areraed to-d»y is whether the administrator of ~ the estate of the deceased Native is liable for the cost of the tangi. or whether, - according to Maori custom,' visitors to the ■• tangi" do not bring certain portion of the food required.
